The Hamersley Basin mining area lies in the Pilbara region of north-west Western Australia, 1,100 km north of Perth. A Chinese company, the China Metallurgical Import & Export Company, has a 40 per cent holding in one of the five major producing mines in the area, the iron ore mine located at Mount Channar.
