Mary Kathleen Uranium Project
Mary Kathleen Uranium Project
While General Counsel of Rio Tinto Limited (then CRA Limited), our Senior Partner, Mr Chambers, was extensively involved in the second phase of the development and operation of the Mary Kathleen Uranium (“MKU”) mine in Queensland. MKU reopened production of uranium oxide in 1976 after the Australian government had taken up a 42% shareholding in the company.
His participation involved working on all government approvals for the uranium mine project, the entering into of international sales contracts and the joint venture arrangements. At the end of 1982 MKU had depleted its ore body and finally closed down after 4,802 tonnes of uranium oxide had been produced in the second phase of its operation.
